Yes, perhaps "stands". That was also my first thought. But I did not feel sure and therefore I looked it up and found the following: Det er ham, der står bag ved = He ist the one behind it all;
He is the one who pulls the strings.

If you find "stands" correct, then it is fine with me. :-)
