In the sixteenth century, when the first printed Lithuanian books appeared, that language was used in two countries: the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Dukedom of Prussia. The appearance of the first books was associated with the Reformation and the Counter-Reformation. They were published in the Prussian dukedom the earliest. First Lithuanian book in Lithuania’s State appeared almost half century later than in Prussia, when the Reformation had already started. This was the result of historical circumstances.
