| | Lilly, can I ask you also a bridge, please. Poll usually doesn't help me. CC: lilian canale |

| | The bridge is in my former post |
| | 29 August 2010 21:30 |
| | Oh, sorry Lilly.
So not "the big pride"? "Ingens decus" - big/great pride... |
| | 29 August 2010 21:49 |
| | Dear Alex!
To emphasize you can add the personal pronoun to the sentence, so:
Tu decus es.
or
Tu flos es. (the "best part" was called "flos" by Romans) |
| | 29 August 2010 23:21 |
| | Hello again Aneta!
I like your suggestion "flos" , which is more appropriate to this context, a sports context?
I translated it that way because in my dictionary, under the Italian word "orgoglio" ( "pride" ) an example refers:
"È l'orgoglio della sua famiglia" ( "He is the pride of his family" ) > "Ingens suorum decus est (et ornamentum)" |
| | 29 August 2010 23:48 |
| | Both are good for me.
About this "He is the pride of his family"- "Ingens suorum decus est (et ornamentum)"
Well, I don't think "ingens" was needed here or maybe it just wasn't translated precisely. I would translate the Latin line as follows:
"He is a great pride of his family (and its ornament)". |

| | Since you let me to choose, I choose "Tu decus es."
Yes, dictionaries are always very helpful, but sometimes they take too much poetic licence.
My Ancient Greek professor used to say that dictionaries have to be consulted only in case of heavy doubts, not for translating everything.
She was right, maybe |
| | 30 August 2010 00:11 |
| | Haha, yes she was right. I proceed just like she said..., but I think it refers rather to people who know one language in 70 % at least. Beginners should use dictionaries as often as possible to discover new words and (first of all) new meanings of the well-known ones...
Nice to talk to you. |
| | 30 August 2010 00:28 |
| | Ok, you can edit now. I have cancelled the poll. |
| | 30 August 2010 00:41 |
| | Dziękuję bardzo, Aneta!
My Polish is improving, huh? |
| | 30 August 2010 00:47 |
| | Oj, tak. Jest coraz lepszy. Nie ma za co, Alex.
I can teach you also Polish if you want. But you will teach me Italian, ok? I still have to imrove it... |
