Why "two of them" and not just "two men"?

The French text does not say "Two men" but only "two". We do not know if we are talking about a man and a woman. I think may be a boy and a girl. But may be there is a better translation. Any suggestion is well come.

Hi! "Stéphanie" being a girl's first name, it would be weird saying "two men" imo.
