After a blaze in 1624 it was replaced and named Cristiania after king Christian IV. Oslo is both a municipality and a county. Mainland neighbouring municipalities are to the west - Baerum, to the north - Ringerike, Lunner and Mittedal, to the east - Skedsmo and Lorenskog, to the south - Enebakk, Ski and Oppegard and by sea, to the south - Nesodden (a peninsula).
Oslo was also called Tigerstaden. The Royal Palace, The Parliament, The House of Government, The Supreme Court and most of the other national public government institutions are situated in Oslo.
