Translation - Romanian-English - Pot să dau un telefon?

Is this a polite way to ask for permission? If so it would be better use "may" instead of "can".

I think that the polite way to ask in Romanian would be: "Îmi permiteţi să dau un telefon?" which in English is "May I make a phone call?".
