the portuguese "te amo" should not be translated to "te quiero" but to the Spanish "te amo". In Spanish both mean I love you, but with very different connotations.

Hi Joanna,

In Spanish both have exactly the same meaning.
I don't underdstand what those different connotations are.
Could you explain that, please?

"¿Me sustentas?" y "Te necesito para amarme" son dos frases ambiguas.

In portuguese : "te quero" mean: "i want you"
and "te amo" means: I love you.

So what's wrong with the translation, gapita?

How does a Brazilian understand this sentence "Me sustenta"? Because I don't get it, and in Spanish it is too moot within this context.

Sustentar como a um teto usando-se uma coluna ou pagar as contas de/alimentar outra pessoa.
Impossível saber qual delas é neste caso.

Yes, Guilon, that "sustentas" puzzled me too.

It's not clear in Portuguese either.
Into Spanish it may be translated as:
"sostener", "apoyar" or "defender".
But it also may mean "sustentar" (supplying food and what is necessary to live.)

So, I'm not really sure on how to translate that to convey the original.

Any ideas are welcome!

That's what I said, but not as clearly as you did, Lili.

Não me parece que o sentido da frase traduzida para espanhol esteja de acordo com o sentido do "português-brasil".
Em espanhol "te quiero" tem o mesmo significado que "te amo"? ...
O espanhol não está longe do português.. parece me que (em espanhol), para cada expressão existe um sentido diferente..(assim como na língua portuguesa)
Não sou perita, peço desculpa se estiver a dizer algum disparate!

"(...)Te amo, cada vez más hasta me da vergüenza.
¿me amas?
¡Yo te amo!"

Sim, Gapita. "te quiero" em español tem o significado de "te amo".
Veja aqui uma breve explicação do Guilon, especialista em español e português (assim como a tradutora deste texto).

I hope I am not intruding into your discussion, I just wanted to explain this:

Te quiero/ te amo = I love you

Te deseo / Tengo ganas de ti = I want you

This works in the same way in all of the Spanish speaking countries, "te quiero" means always "I love you"
