If addressing others the second person possessive is OK: 'Veredel jou siel' | | | 4 July 2011 12:19 | | LeinNumber of messages: 3389 | OK, so different from Dutch where it is more common to say 'je' in this case? Please go ahead and change if you think that would be better in Afrikaans! | | | 5 July 2011 21:50 | | | No Lein, Afrikaans isn't any different from Dutch in this respect. It is Portuguese that, in my opinion, is less prone to use the possessive pronoun, so that 'a alma' could mean either 'die siel' or 'jou siel'. One would need more context to decide.
Thinking it over, the possessive meaning is more likely in such a phrase, and, as you are rightly intimating, 'jou' can be used in a general sense as well. Ergo: I am changing my opinion.
Lilian has only asked for a bridge, but as I seem te be the only 'expert' for Afrikaans on Cucumis, I'll take care of this evaluation and approve your translation. Best regards. | | | 5 July 2011 21:54 | | | Hi Guido,
I didn't ask for a bridge, I provided the bridge so that you could evaluate the translation. |
