A database with the theme 'This technology couldn't reach you!'. For a long time, we, young people, have been told 'You were unable to reach that period' or some conversations starting with 'Back in our time...'. We oppose these statements and say 'We are not the ones who couldn't reach something; it is this technology that couldn't reach us'.

'you were unable to reach that period' is a Turkish way of saying 'that was before your time'.
It means young people didn't live in that period, they weren't born yet, that's why they don't know about it and older people tell them about this period with sentences starting with "Back in our time.."

Hi yenerunver

I can see this is a tricky phrase to translate! I think I know what you are trying to say, but the English doesn't sound very natural yet. How about this?

A database with the theme 'This technology couldn't reach you!'. For a long time, we, young people, have been told 'That period was unable to reach you' or some conversations starting with 'Back in our time...'. We oppose these statements and say 'We are not the ones who couldn't reach something; it is this technology that couldn't reach us'.

In the notes: 'that period was unable to reach you' is a Turkish way of saying 'that was before your time'.

Is that about right? Let me know what you think!
Thanks!

Thanks merdogan

That is the same (in meaning) as what yenerunver said. I think yenerunver's translation works better - often, literal translations are not very good from Turkish to English as the meaning is not clear anymore. Thanks anyway

Hi!
I think this translation is really good, but I want to make a suggestion.

For this sentence :

"That period was unable to reach you"

According to the source text, it should be:

You were unable to reach that period

So it means, young people couldn't live that period, they weren't born yet, that's why they don't know about it and older people tell them their period with sentences starting with "Back in our time.."

What do you think?

“sen o döneme yetişemedin” is not the same as 'That period was unable to reach you' - it's turned around for some reason. It should be something like "You couldn't reach that time", but that doesn't make sense in English (nor does the other translation). What does this mean?
