Espírito Livre;

Conhece A Ti Mesmo;
Remarks about the translation
Gostaria que as expressões fossem escritas de duas maneiras:

a primeira, com as palavras escritas com as primeiras letras maiúsculas, exemplo: "Conhece A Ti Mesmo" / "Espírito Livre";

a segunda maneira de forma normal como em uma frase, exemplo: "Conhece a ti mesmo"; Espírito livre"

Muito Obrigado...

Να ρωτήσω, μήπως πρέπει να προσθέσουμε και το "γνώθι σαυτόν" ως μετάφραση του "Conhece A Ti Mesmo";

Μπορεί, αλλά δεν πιστεύω να είναι τίποτα το γνώστό εδώ. Και είναι ρήμα - δεν είναι ουσιαστικό. It's "Know yourself", not "self-knowledge".

The question was whether to use an older, but very well known expression for "Know thyself". I now agree with irini that we should do that, so I changed my translation to the one she suggested.

Kafetzou, why not ελεύθερο πνεύμα (free spirit)?

Ελεύθερη ψυχή is just "free soul".

( Γνώθι σ’αυτόν or γνώθι σαυτόν is ok! )

Nope! In ancient Greek it would be γνῶθι σαὑτόν and in modern γνώθι σαυτόν (or γνῶθισεαυτόν /γνώθι σεαυτόν).

I agree about the free spirit though. As a verbatim translation mind you; I don't really speak Spanish.

They are both philosophical sayings:

the first one is from Nietzsche, referring to the humanists (de- freie Geister).

the second one is the maxim of Socrates.

caspertavernello lol! Sorry I was reading the Spanish wikipedia and I made a mistake. I meant that I don't really speak Portuguese so when it comes to expressions I cannot speak with any authority.
