I can't say salută-l/salut-o pe Soni, cause I don't know whether that is a man, or a woman, so I used an impersonal form. According to my grammar book it is possible, if it is about unindentified persons. Cojocaru,Romanian grammar.
And my husband speaks Romanian for 35 years, and he says it's ok to use an impersonal form when you don't know who's the thing about.

you can simply say :"Salută-l/salut-o pe Soni" or “Îl/o salut pe Soni” and mention in the comments field you don't know whether is a woman or a man.
The way you put it, it sounds a little bit awkward. I agree with the girls.
