It is a special procedure to avoid odor and decomposition of the corpse, first implemented in ancient Egypt. The main reason for that is that they believe in afterlife. Ancient Egyptians used to bury their corpses in shallow pits and directly into the sand. Most of the oldest mummies belong to the royal family. Gradually, it started to be implemented by the lower classes of society, and by everyone who could afford meeting the cost of the proccess.
