Shortly after the riots, like many other white Detroiters, my parents began looking for a house in the suburbs. The surbur they had their sights on was the affluent lakefront district. Of the auto magnates : Grosse Pointe.
Il was much harder than they ever expected. Il the Cadillac, my parents saw FOR SALE signs on many lawns. But when they stopped in at the realty offices and filled out applications, they found that the houses suddently went off the market, or were sold, or doubled in price.

Peu de temps aprÃ¨s les Ã©meutes, comme beaucoup d'autres blancs de DÃ©troit , mes parents ont commencÃ© Ã chercher une maison en banlieue. Ils Ã©taient interessÃ©s par une banlieue dans la zÃ´ne bordant l'affluent du lac. Celle des usines d'automobiles : Grosse Pointe.
C'Ã©tait beaucoup plus dur que ce qu'ils pensaient. Dans la Cadillac, mes parents ont vu des panneaux "Ã€ VENDRE"sur beaucoup de pelouses. Mais quand ils se sont arrÃªtÃ©s aux agences immobiliÃ¨res et ont rempli leur demande, ils ont constatÃ© que les maisons avaient soudainement disparu du marchÃ©, ou avaient Ã©tÃ© vendues, ou avaient doublÃ© de prix.
