I've changed the first sentence. But in the second sentence 'a picture' sounds better to me.

Well, unfortunatelly "we" should be concerned with what is "the right way of saying something" and not "what sounds right to us." But, its up to you...:-))

I don't see a difference between 'a' and 'the'.

Actually there is a difference.
If the original says "the", it should be kept. It means that they are talking about a specific picture.

Well it's 'A picture of her friends', so that couldn't be any more specific.

NPazarka..It is not "a picture of her friends" because it is obvious that "the two of them" know what picture they are talking about..Please, review English grammar on definite and indefinite articles..Thanks.
