Lo "Stabat Mater" è una miniatura in grande scala e rimane uno dei lavori più amati di Palestrina. Le armonie ipnotiche sono apertamente modali e donano pertanto un'aria chiaramente nostalgica alla linea melodica. Questa natura morta della Vergine Maria che fissa immobile il corpo di suo Figlio crocifisso è tra i ritratti più potenti e toccanti del tardo Rinascimento.
