Yes, it could also be "compromise". I translated as "engagement" because I think the text talks about a relationship: the person talks about somebody who will never know what being engaged with someone is. I think that in this kind of context that's the word we use.
Anyway, I'm not sure, so it's better to note that version in the remarks field.
