Aha - now I understand it, Garret!

But we don't say "I know ... very badly" in English. Would it be OK to say, "My Russian is very poor" or "I speak Russian very poorly"?

You see ... i tried to say it as we usualy say in russian. This is somthing like - I know Russian very less
In German it says - "Ich weiß Russisch ein bisschen"

I think that
"I know Russian a little bit"
matches the best

It is realy hard to translate somthing written not in correct way =)
This phrase can have to options:
я знаю русский немного - I do know Russian a little bit
OR
я знаю по-русскии очень немного - I speak Russian very poorly
The way the autor said "я очень мало русский знаю " is slightly incorrect =)

How can you express your love in english ?
You just say : "I love you!"
There are 1001 different known forms to express it in russian,,,
so trying to be efficient in russian language "c'est la mer à boire"...

>я немного знаю русский язык
>я совсем немного знаю русский язык

"a little bit" has positive meaning, means that the guy knows language a bit so he is able to speak, that is an absolute opposite meaning of the sentence. The guy said that he doesn`t know russian well enough to be able to communicate!!!! Idenisenko is absolutely right! - "my russian is poor !"

idenisenko, I don't speak Russian at all, but I can certainly tell you that there is more than one way to express love in English!!!

"How do I love thee? Let me count the ways."
I adore you.
I am in love with you.
I cannot live without you.
You are my one and only.
You are the light of my life.
etc., etc., etc.

Garret, i`m sure that the guy ment he doesn`t know russian well and can`t comunicate (negative meaning), the word "ochen" is emphasizing on it. If it would be positive there would be "ya nemnogo znayu russkiy" =))

I'm not agreed, but no matter, let it be so =)
1. Не is not native Russian speaker and translated the phrase word for word.
2. He also can boast of knowing Russian a little bit.
Anyway this is enough to understand meaning =))
