By "writings"...do you mean "subtitles"?

I didn't get this line: "The device is switched on by the commander"

Hi lilian, I think instead of subtitles,he means the writings on the digital screen of the device. Maybe we might say "text" or "words" ?

The other sentence is like the device is only switched on by the remote control ( zapper?), and it cannot be switched off otherwise. I think the problem is with the word "commander", I should make it remote control?

What about:
"The text is not displayed on the screen"
and
"The device can only be switched on with the remote control"?

Yes it's much better

It is for me "The writings are not displayed on the screen" not a text.
