I didn't get this line: "The device is switched on by the commander"

Hi lilian, I think instead of subtitles,he means the writings on the digital screen of the device. Maybe we might say "text" or "words" ?

The other sentence is like the device is only switched on by the remote control ( zapper?), and it cannot be switched off otherwise. I think the problem is with the word "commander", I should make it remote control?

What about:
"The text is not displayed on the screen"
and
"The device can only be switched on with the remote control"?
