| | Hi handyy,
By "blotted" do you mean "dry" or "stained"?
and by "lindens", "basswood"? If so, I think I still prefer: "Lindens shed tears from the soul"
and "burried in the ground" |

| | Hi,
--> blotted = stained
--> linden = basswood
---------
"Ihlamurlar can aÄŸladi", here it exactly says, "Lindens wept souls(rather than tears)", so I had some doubts while translating it.

| | OK, let's set a poll and see if someone comes up with any ideas. |

| | hello handyy, lilian
nice translation.
Instead of just 'blotted' maybe
"tarnished/soiled/stained/blotted with sin"? |

| | My suggestions:
was blotted --> has been tainted
split --> separation
The tree is called "linden" in English - there's one right in front of my house, but I agree with Lilian that it sounds more poetic if we use a more literal translation: "The lindens grieved from their souls". |

| | no problem! but I just want to learn why "blotted" is not correct. I sincerely want to learn, doesn't "to blot" have the same meaning with "to taint" (--> to corrupt morally)?? |
| | 2 Avgust 2008 17:34 |
| | Nowadays, "to blot" usually means to soak up liquid, as in "I blotted the floor with a paper towel". I've never heard it with the same meaning as "to taint", but maybe in Britain or in an old-fashioned context. Also, the noun "blot" seems to have that moral meaning more often: "There's a blot on his character."
But "to taint" is much better here because it's totally unambiguous - every English speaker would understand that it means "morally stained". |

| | I got it Kafetzou. Thank you so much |

| | Also, I think separation is better than split for the same reason - less easily misunderstood. |
