Последнее сообщение | | | | | 17 Февраль 2008 12:23 | | | Don't you say "how do you do" when meeting a new person?
"Ce mai faci tu?" means "How are you?"/"How are you feeling?"/"How have you been?"/"How have you been feeling?"... | | | 17 Февраль 2008 13:29 | | FreyaКол-во сообщений: 1910 | It can also mean, but it usually doesn't :
"What else are you doing/do you do? " but for this it would have required a "altceva" : "ce (altceva) mai faci tu ?"
Yes, I also noticed that after the usual "Hello", "How do you do?" is translated in the movies like "Încântat de cunoştinţă" which means "Pleased to meet you".
Romanian... strange language, strange people as well !
So, I guess there should be added some comments. | | | 17 Февраль 2008 23:02 | | | Yeap, I would have translated by "How are you doing?" or "How have you been?". I knew the same, "How do you do?" is a retoric question addressed when you meet, for the first time, a person, not to ask how that person have been. I have not voted negativ because I am not 100% sure, so that's why I ask you, Ian. Maybe you can enlighten us a little bit.

How do you do?
does not require an answer;
How are you?
usually does
(although some people use the second one in the same way)
So if you really want to know how the other person feels, we should translate this as
How are you?
or
How are things?
or
How are you doing?
etc. | | | 18 Февраль 2008 11:04 | | | Changed, folks! Thanks!
Prof. Ian, maybe resetting the poll would be a good thing to do now... | | | 18 Февраль 2008 14:57 | | | | | | 18 Февраль 2008 20:08 | | | "how've you been" is the correct answer because "how are you" should be translated as "ce faci". | | | 18 Февраль 2008 21:05 | | | "how've you been?" ar însemna mai degrabă "ce-ai mai făcut?"/"cum te-ai mai simÅ£it?", deÅŸi merge ÅŸi în cazul acesta... Eu rămân totuÅŸi la varianta "how are you?". Cred că este cea mai apropiată ca sens. |
