Tantine, warn me if I am wrong, but as far as I know if we use "could have (done)", then the meaning becomes "I could do something (in the past), but I didn't do it". If I am right, then, we should use "would have (done)" here.

Dear handyy,
you are right with "I could do something (in the past), but I didn't do it".
but it can be also , "if I knew that I could have ...."
or
"if I was in his/her shoes I could have ...."
am I wrong?

Hi Merdogan,

I guess your sentences ("if I knew that I could have ..../if I was in his/her shoes I could have ...." still convey the same meaning. They are indicating something in the past, which could not be changed any more. Namely, if you say "if I knew that, I could have ....", it shows that you are -again- talking about something which could be done in the past, but wasn't done.

I could be wrong, but I think in this way. Tantine, I am waiting for your helpful explanations

I agree with handyy too. Also I think that present unreal would be more appropriate.

Tense'de bir sorun alduğunu düşünüyorum,çünkü bu kullanılan tense geçmişte düzeltmek istediklerimiz için kullanılır,ancak cümleye bakıldığında şimdiki zamandan bahsediyoruz.

florinka has suggested what I suggested in my previous message. Present unreal should be used.

Hi All

I think it is the word "erase" that seems to be creating the problem here.

"To erase" means to delete, and can apply to written text, recorded tape, magnetic tape etc... I do not think the word is adapted here.

If we replace "erase" with "eradicate" (which means to get rid of, to discard) the phrase would be much more understandable in English.

Let me know what you think.
