They mortgage their houses, get contributions from their cousins, and summon money for a really experienced lawyer who is far better than T.'s prosecutor. The daughter's testimony is questioned - she is only twelve years old, T. had been drinking, had little clothes on, could not identify the men, and the judge was in general very sulky. She is debilitated.
The justice partly becomes real. The policeman JD, who came to the boathouse and earlier only knew Teena by name, is now getting to know her as a private person and is helping her to get her vengeance.
