Hi Casper, perhaps "condemned" instead of "judged".

"The supreme court has condemned a fourty-year-old man to fifteen months' imprisonment for rape, but put it down to a twelve-month sentence."

I know that a literal translation was required but it sounds really weird in English.
What do you think?

I think it would be better put the literal one in the notes and its real meaning in the main box.

Agree!

We should have the best translation in the main field, and as casper said, let's put the literal translation in the field "Remarks about the translation".

If we put and accept the literal translation in the main translation field, someone, who believe it is perfect, may use it wrongly.

Ok.
And what do you think about my "translation" and Lilian's version, Bamsa?

"put it down" er ekki nógu góð þýðing.

OY... My head was in the clouds the last days. Let's see, I thought the other Icelandic said something about the translation.

The problem is that "en frestað fullnustu tólf mánaða refsingarinnar" means 12 months of the punishment have been postponed for later (they are supposed to be executed later). Can be used "suspended sentence" in stead?

What about that Bamsa? Does it convey the meaning?
