Pen=Caneta e não Papel. Utilizar a palavra caneta deixaria a frase sem sentido, talvez colocar "na ponta do lápis" ao invés de "no papel", deixaria a tradução mais fiel e contextualizada.

Uma tradução deve soar natural mantendo o sentido original.
A expressão "put to pen" é traduzida como "colocar no papel".
"Na ponta do lápis" tem um outro sentido em português que é: "fazer as contas" (com cuidado e sem esquecer nada)
