This doesn't mean that he wanted to forget his past. It certainly wasn't easy for him to integrate. Continuing to live the way he was used to thus allowed him to keep his bearings. So, by means of the newspapers, he rediscovered, if only for a little, his roots. This betrays a feeling of nostalgia toward his country. Also maybe he needed to feel that he belonged to a community to feel at ease.
