The children, growing up in an orphanage, are hungry. They are fighting among themselves as to who will ask for more gruel, and Oliver is chosen. At dinner that evening, after the usual meal is distributed, Oliver approaches the orphanage director and says he'd like more. The orphanage director, Mr. Bumble, after Oliver asks this question, decides they will give him to anyone who wants him as an apprentice. Oliver is given to Mr. Sowerberry as an apprentice.
