Perhaps "I've been a fool for having fallen in love with you" might work better. The Romanian word for stupid, i.e. "prost/proasta" can convey a lot of meanings. In English, however, "stupid" usually designates only someone who lacks intellectual capacity. While this example refers rather to the fact that the person has been foolish, lacking wits, not intellectually retarded.

I am really sorry, but I have to contradict you. I have heard the expression "I am /was stupid" in situations where people were expressing their regret about doing something stupid.

If we consult my "bible" (Oxford dictionary), this one gives thefollow explanation:

"stupid • adjective (stupider, stupidest) 1 lacking intelligence or common sense. 2 informal used to express exasperation or boredom: your stupid paintings! 3 dazed and unable to think clearly. " As you can see it is not only lack of intelligence. Even, sometimes, we actually suffer of temporary lack of intelligence when we fall in love with the wrong persons.

Besides "I've been a fool" would be translated by "am fost proastă", not "sunt proastă" as it is in the initial text.
