Живял беден дървар с жена си и двете си деца, момченцето се казвало Хензел, а момиченцето Гретел. Той не изкарвал много за прехраната на семейството и когато веднъж в страната станала голяма скъпотия, не можел вече да припечелва дори за насъщния хляб. Като си легнал една вечер, мислите и грижите не му дали да заспи. Непрекъснато се въртял в леглото, пъшкал и накрая рекъл на жена си:
