I don't understand you. What do you mean by 'the bridge'?

'Modet' could be translated as: 'The fashion' or 'Courage' (def. form). But since he was a religious Thinker-philosoph I would guess it refers to the later!! A literal translation would be: "Courage is the true measure of life.".. but if you check the net it's often translated as: “Courage is life's only measure.”
