hi Tantine, I had the same doubt my english is not perfect but speaking with people I heard both, present simple and -ing form.
Also it may depend on the contxt, this is probably a short part of a dialogue, maybe this sentence refers not to something specific, but it has been sayd in general, so that appeared to me to be best solution and compromise.
