| iriniNumber of messages: 849 | The problem is that the GREEK is the original and we are looking for the best ENGLISH translation.
Γι' αυτό λÎω ότι το ελληνικό δε βγάζει νόημα. Δεν μεταφÏάζουμε στα ελληνικά το "I think I'm falling in love" αλλά στα αγγλικά το "σκÎφτομαι ότι εÏωτεÏομαι". Εγώ Ï€Ïοσωπικά δεν το Îχω ακοÏσει ποτΠαυτό. |

| iriniNumber of messages: 849 | Έλα ντε!
Αν όχι όμως; Î Ïοτείνω (αν συμφωνείς) να Ï€ÏοσθÎσεις μια σημείωση με το Ï€Ïοβληματικόν της φÏάσης (δηλαδή ότι αυτό που μεταφÏάζεις είναι η μετάφÏαση της συνήθυους φÏάσης "νομίζω ότι εÏωτεÏομαι" και ότι η κατά λÎξη μετάφÏαση είναι κάτι όπως το "I'm contemplating I am falling in love". |

| | I think we should contact the requester and tell him that the original text seems to be a translation from English, but that it is not a normal sentence in Greek. Maybe he can give us more information. |
| | 10 November 2007 03:48 |
| | Good idea, kafetzou!
Can you take over on this one for me? Too much Greek...
I won't say it, no, I won't say it, oh God, I'm gonna say it:
It's all Greek to me!
Shit, I said it... |
| | 10 November 2007 15:59 |
| | Yes - I've already sent him a message (in Turkish - he's a Turkish speaker). But he hasn't logged on since he first posted the request on Nov. 4th, so I'm afraid this one may be doomed to the "circular file" ... |
| | 10 November 2007 16:08 |
| | Well, I wrote a note in to the translation. I hope this solves the problem. |
| | 10 November 2007 16:20 |
| | Yes - I saw that, and it's a really good idea. Maybe I should validate it now. irini, what do you think? |
| | 11 November 2007 00:59 |
| iriniNumber of messages: 849 | Yeap, with the note it looks much, much better. Since we can't really ever figure out exactly what it was supposed to mean validate away
Ian you meanie! |

| | Hi irini!
I hope you've heard that expression before:
"It's all Greek to me!"
It's a really old, cliche'd English expression meaning
"I can't understand any of this"
(I guess because long ago, English speakers couldn't read Greek letters!)
Actually, it's funny, in French, with the exact same meaning, we say "It's Chinese!"
Anyway, I realized what a stupid thing I was saying! (We usually hate using cliche's in English...)
Sorry for the dumb dumb joke! |
| | 11 November 2007 08:01 |
| | And in German, "It seems Spanish to me" - "Es kommt mir Spanisch vor". |
| | 11 November 2007 08:07 |
| | in Chinese, it is:
God's language! |
| | 11 November 2007 09:01 |
| iriniNumber of messages: 849 | Well, as I already told Ian I wasn't insulted or anything (in fact I am rather used to it ) . In Greek it's "It's chinese" too, but I think the Chinese chose the best by far!! |
| | 11 November 2007 16:06 |
| | In Spanish is Chinese too! We are alike to Greeks in some ways... All Mediterranean people anyway!
|
| | 12 November 2007 01:36 |
| | Wow! I'm so glad I made that dumb joke! I learned so much here because of it! |
