That would be a word-for-word translation. I think my translation captures the tone of the text better.

but 'geh doch nach hause' has not a negative meaning. It is only a wish.

That is the same for 'why don't you just go home'. It is not really a question (even though it looks like one), it is something like a suggestion / informal command.
