Paskutinės žinutės | | | | | 30 sausis 2008 05:11 | | | I think it should be 'The death of all deaths', especially since the context is not available | | | 30 sausis 2008 09:18 | | pneŽinučių kiekis: 14 | Along the lines of "eis tous aionas ton aionon", you mean?
Though I'm not sure whether it's licit to translate the plural "thanatoi" with the singular "death". | | | 31 sausis 2008 09:10 | | | sa nohma einai swsto, apo thn allh kanei th metafrash me latinikoys xarakthres!!! | | | 31 sausis 2008 12:39 | | | | | | 1 vasaris 2008 11:44 | | | tanatoi ton tanaton: This was translated the deaths of deaths...it would seem that since tanatoi and tanaton are not exactly the same it should be the death of deaths. Also, this would seem to be better in English. | | | 1 vasaris 2008 18:53 | | pneŽinučių kiekis: 14 | Tanatoi and tanaton are not exactly the same because "oi thanatoi" (οι θάνατοι) is nominative plural and "ton thanaton" (των θανάτων) is genitive plural. They're both plural, though; the difference is between "(the) deaths" and "of (the) deaths".
"Thanatos" vs "tanatos" seems to me to be a spelling error -- the correct spelling of the word "death" has a theta at the beginning, not a tau. (θάνατος) | | | 1 vasaris 2008 23:49 | | | Hi pne
I understand that in Greek the first "deaths" is plural, but in English this gives rise to a phrase that feels a little clumsy.
As dramati says above, it looks better as "the death of deaths".
As the translation request is "meaning only" I don't think there is much point in "nitpicking".
