In a fine restaurant

People spoke and spoke,
and nothing was said.

People listened and listened,
but nothing was heard.

What am I doing here?

Hi hungi,

I changed "men" into "people",
"fine restaurant" into "a refined restaurant"
and capitalized the pronoun "I".

I think 'feinen' is better translated when the word 'fancy' is used.

"fancy" sounds fine too.

"In a fine restaurant" sounds much better and is much more common than "In a refined restaurant". It is also a more accurate translation of "Im feinen Restaurant". Additionally, when one mentions a fine restaurant, it is implied that it is somewhat, if not very, fancy.
I don't think it should have been changed.

I also think "people" is a good translation. And I believe "fine" is the better choice if not "classy". What do you think?

the word people isn't right, and fine is much better than refined for this kind of text.

Considering the meaning of the poem I find "people" correct. It could also read "guests" or "they". Why, Lila, do you think that people in not right?
If nothing speaks against it, I would prefer "people" or "they".

I agree with Minny. "they" would be a good choice.
