The choice of lexis is perfect in both translations. But they deviated from the original meaning. The original sentence rather means "you didn't listen to the viper but my mother did, etc..".

Hello Lilian
Question: is that some biblical text or what?
Because this is the only way it can be acceptable...else, I have to say there is a deviation in meaning from the original text, like Tarkbar said(and that applys to both the English and French versions)

I don't know. I translated the line from The French version. What would the literal translation of the original be?

I believe it is supposed to be something like this:
"You didn't (listen/pay heed) to the viper/serpent but my mother erred and responded(literally "listened" ) to its appeal"
Notice that in Arabic we don't have issues of past/present perfect/past perfect...etc...
But I prefer using the past tense for this one.
I'm also not sure about using the word "erred" so if you have another word for that feel free to use it.
I hope you can give us your feedback on that too Tarakbr
