For one thing, I was born poor.
or
To start with, I was born poor.
The expression should show that the person will probably enumerate several things, one after another. Do you get it?

No original em francês a palavra refusé ocorre duas vezes, enquanto que na tradução em inglês são usadas as palavras "refused" e "denied"; a primeira, erroneamente. Além disso o parágrafo e a interrogação no fim do texto não ocorrem no original. | | |
