'in his own right' usually means '(even) without taking the context into account' - for example, art can be valuable as a tool for intercultural communication but I think it is also valuable in its own right (so even if there is no use whatsoever for it, I think art is valuable to the human race).

'by ourselves' would mean 'without any help from others'.

How about simply 'as much as we can'?
