in his value - "in their value" should have been something with "loro", "nel loro valore", but I'm not sure of it.

I found it strange too . The correct structure would be that (in their value) bacause I think the "value" refers to the "ideas" which is plural. The way it is it seems that "il suo valore" refers to the "man", not the ideas...
What do you think?

"nel suo valore" refers to the man himself, not to the idea. It means that if a man doesn't want to "run a risk" for his ideas he doesn't trust himself any longer and thus feels worthless.
