infelice=unhappy
there is a subtle difference between the two words: "infelice" is a non-positive word highlighting the lack of happiness (maybe because the person has been happy before or hopes to be later so), "triste" highlights the negative situation of being sad without any relation with the earlier or later happiness...
Maybe other Italian experts agree with my opinion...
It should be seen in the original text which one of the two possibiities had been expressed...
