Could you explain "grundspelet"?

"ground play" doesn't make sense to me

spel = game ?

Ah ....I don't know how to explain, it's kind of the first phase in a hockey leauge.

Can you say "a tournament" (bracket?)

"we played very well during the tournament and went (got) to the playoff"

That would sound fine.

Hope that the people who vote will think the same and accept just "tournament". I think that "grundspel" is a common phrase in hockey, football, handball etc., but I can't find the exact word in English.

Tournament is fine, also sometimes it could be called round robin phase....and maybe qualified to the playoffs.
