I think all the sentences refer to the athlete not to the country, therefore what was expected was his victory.

You are right about that this "article" is about him, the athlete. But the Swedish word "jamaicansk" is refering to the country. But since this is "meaning only", maybe it's more logical to translate it that way. I'll edit "back", thanks again.
"jamaicanen" (male) = the person.
"jamaicanskan" (F) = the person.
