I see there is some confusion. There are many ways to say it in English...but you guys have to tell me WHAT you want to say in English. Please make a decision.

You have a point in your comments pinark , I agree this is a literal translation but I think the text meant to be a literal version of the proverb you mention. So dramati, I'll change "whip" as "challenge (something which tests one's ability)" as it sounds too literal for everyone.
