Translated by Lein
Target language: English

The eyes can smile
The mouth can laugh
But the pain in the heart, no-one can see.
Remarks about the translation
A translation with a bit more freedom:

A smile in the eyes
A laugh on the face
But the sorrowful heart is in an unseen place

"Eyes can smile" otherwise it should have been "øjnene".
"Mouthes can smile" otherwise "mund".
I'd say "the "the pain"
instead of "sadness" which , in Danish is "tristheden'.
But perhaps it's only a
synonyme.

The addition of a definite article is acceptable in this case, even if absent in the original. But "munde" is plural. Furthermore, sometimes the order of the words is crucial, not for the meaning, buit for the emphasis. A better translation would be: "but the pain in/of the heart, nobody notices" or something like that.

"pain" instead of "sadness".

Others, fine in my opinion.

"øjne" is plural too - singulat is "øje" so I don't think we should use the definite article.

Lene, you "called" me, I'm not an English expert ... but I AGREE with you, it's not definite in the original!

I think this must be one of the trickiest things to learn about English grammar!! There are 'rules' for articles, right... but it seems there are also many exceptions, d'oh!

Hehe, Yes I know that you're not an English expert, dear Pia. But as you had given your opinion I wanted you to be informed. Oh², English, it's seems so easy but it's quite hard, but luckywise we have our dear expert to correct us.
