Isn't this the same for (metaphorical) meaning, if not literally? (If I stand in your way, I make it impossible or very difficult for you to do what you wanted to do.) If you don't agree, feel free to reject

Yes, dear. I also believe that a sens of "standing in a way" is the same with "hindering" here.
I just think that the key verb here is "to let", "to allow". In Latin we express it by "permittere".
