the problem is that the original lacks punctuation and sounds like it has a second part chopped out of it

Can you put in some punctuation here? It doesn't make sense in English in its current form.

This is better, but there are still some problems in English. For example, you can't say "to whom lived ..." - it has to be "to him who lived ..." This is true of all the cases where you have "to whom + active verb".

we sometimes wonder when the simplest answer is stairing at us in the eye
