The order of words in the second like has emphatic importance. Better to translate "more than that you cannot do"

I mean that the word "mere" has been placed at the head of the sentence in order to emphasize (understrege, and that this has to be reflected in the translation. "Mere" is the object and would usually be placed after the verb, and the order has been changed in orer to emphasize.
