Yes, I thought about using "entrust", but to my ears it sounded better "rely on the wind".
Do you think the meaning changes?

no, I don't think the meaning is changed, I have the impression (of a non native speaker of none of these languages)that "rely" is not very poetical, but, of course, I may be wrong
