"I wish I were able..." is not very usual.
I'd use:
"I wish I could..." or " I'd like to be able..."
also, perhaps "next to me" would sound better as: "close to/near me" or "by my side"

I think you're right. My variant, now that I can compare it to yours, seems "stiff".
"I wish I could have you by my side" sounds perfect to me.
