Why not "... but I'm fond of you"?

volere bene (qualcuno) = to be fond (of sb)

Just a suggestion! The usual translation for "ti voglio bene" is "I love you" (or "I like you" ).

Try reevaluating "ti voglio bene". Try something more like "I wish you well", "I mean for you to be well", or "I don't mean to harm/hurt you". "I love you" doesn't quite make it.

" I don't mean to hurt you" goes also well. What is its meaning in italian ? " Non volevo ferirti"? Is this meaning the same in the text?

"I don't mean to hurt you" is not ok (non volevo ferirti).

"I'm fond of you", by pirulito, is the best choice, go for it!
